Jabber SSL with Adium, part II

In a previous post, I showed how you can make sure that Adium is using SSL to communicate with the Jabber server. Adium has matured quite a bit, and now it is easier to accomplish this (I am using version 0.74):

  • Make sure that /Applications/Utilities/SSL Enabler.app doesn’t have an entry for port 5223. If it does, delete it.
  • In your Jabber account settings in Adium, the port should be set to 5223
  • Also in your Jabber account settings in Adium, “Use TLS encryption if possible” and “Allow plaintext authentication over unencrypted streams” should NOT be checked, and “Force old-style SSL” should be checked.

Adium 0.74 Jabber SSL Settings

That’s it. Notice that if you uncheck “Force old-style SSL” an try to connect, it doesn’t work, because the jabber.org server demands SSL over port 5223.

Note: it seems like TLS is the prefered encryption method these days (at least according to the wording of the Adium preferences), so why doesn’t Adium have an option to force TLS?
