blosxom is awesome

I have long been looking for a good blog/journal system. My criteria were that
it should be open source, hostable on my machine without needing to author thro
ugh a service (like Blogger), not use a database, have either a simple or a wid
ely accepted and standard file format, and have a category system that won’t ma
ke me sweat about choosing just the right category for my post.

I have found it: blosxom[http://www.blosxom.co
m
]. Its category system is really great. Entries are kept as flat files, an
d categories are denoted by the path of directories in which the entries reside
. Not only is this simple and intuitive, but it allows for unbelievably easy ca
tegory restructuring at any time.

For example if I put several posts in the “cat” category, but then I wanted to
write a post in the “dog” category, and i wanted them both to be under the “ani
mal” category, I could just make a directory called “animal”, drag the cat dire
ctory into it, and make a new directory in it called “dog”.

Blosxom always scans the whole hierarchy, and shows posts by date, regardless o
f category. So all my posts will remain in the same order, but have a different
category structure.

Other nifty features:
-the system is one perl file
-a “flavour” (themes) architecture. Flavours can be developed by users and dist
ributed modularly.
-a plug-in architecture, for extending the functionality of the core system. Th
ese too can be distributed modularly, usually as one file. The installation pro
cess consists of dropping the plug-in into the plug-in directory. http://bla
